Digipak - first draft

Magazine advert drafts

Front cover drafts

Pictures used are stills from the music video; this will allow the album to have a concept theme and be easily recognizable, especially having the album named after the promotional single.

The images themselves represent the theme of the song/music video as they convey isolation. This is done by a high angle (giving the connotation of looking down on the protagonist) and a long shot (conveying loneliness).

I also used the theme of involving an actual black cloud. In the first image, I included it by putting it over the main image and lowering the opacity conveying a sense of depression. In the second, I used to the magic eraser tool to cut out the blue sky and change it to a dark, black cloud filled sky. I did this to connote the idea of a gloomy life to fit with the theme of the song.

Magazine advert - layout

From my research, I have been able to construct the initial design of my magazine advert including all the conventions needed.

Magazine advert conventions

From looking at this research i have found that the main image of the text is often the album artwork, this is to successfully promote the album by showing is physical form. This is also done by following a simple colour scheme to fit the theme of the album.

Another convention I found was the size and position of the band's name. This is to catch the eye of the magazine reader, who may or may not be a fan, and to make them read the advert. The reinforcement of the release date makes them aware that this is an upcoming release which might persuade them to buy it when it comes out.

A convention I found, which I will include in my ancillary text, is the use of a review, quote or rating. This will be used to impress the reader which will create hype for the album; especially if it is from a powerful music outlet, like Kerrang!, which they trust.

One feature I found interesting was the introduction of the QR code. This will mostly appeal to a younger, modern audience that heavily use web 2.0 and social media. This will allow the album to be further advertised through the medium of the Internet thus spreading it to a larger audience.

Also, using the convention of featuring the lead single will promote the album/artist to an audience who are aware of the single but not the artist.

First edit

I did this to get an impression on how the rest of the first draft will look. From this I learnt that some shots will have to be re-done in the second draft due to bad lighting and and unfocused shots.

Protagonist costume

Sticking to the stereotype of our genre, we used all black clothing including jumper, leather jacket and hoodie which are included in several music videos within our genre such as Kids In Glass Houses' 'Peace' (2013).
